Course Surfaces

Most of the course mileage is very runnable. Trekking poles are allowed. The trails are all well maintained and generally not exceptionally steep or technical. The first 2.5 mile section and last 2.5 mile section is a very fast, flat portion of the Oregon Coast Trail consisting of some trail, groomed lawn, gravel path and some paved road shoulder along the coastal shoreline bluffs skirting the edge of town in Yachats between the start/finish and the Hwy 101 crossing. After the Hwy 101 crossing, the course is almost entirely dirt singletrack trail and becomes much more hilly. This section is mostly runnable, with some significant climbs and descents. Here there are many areas with shallow spruce tree roots and rocky sections to negotiate. Footbridges can be very slick, especially if it’s raining— use caution on footbridges!
