Before registering and participating in any of our events, a race participant must agree to the following policies in their entirety. Daybreak Racing reserves the right to modify these policies at any time.
Refunds, Transfers, Deferrals:
Refunds: There are no refunds given for any reason— please do not ask.
Transfers: Transfer of a race registration to another runner is not allowed, no exceptions.
Deferrals: We do not offer deferrals to the next year, except in the case of a pregnancy deferral (see that policy below).
If a runner is registered for a race and can’t make it, their option is to withdraw via their Ultrasignup account and receive partial credit. See the Race Credit Policy below.
Runner Withdrawal:
Runners sometimes need to cancel their registration. We totally get it, unexpected things happen and sometimes a race just isn’t going to work out. Withdrawing from a race allows you to recover a portion of your race registration fee in the form of race credit. We want you to come back and race with us again and again while also honoring our ongoing year-round hard work and the non-recoverable expenses we incur per event. See the Race Credit Policy below, which includes Cancellation Instructions.
Pregnancy Deferral:
Any registered runner who becomes pregnant during the months preceding their race may opt for a Pregnancy Deferral. Please email a doctor's note to us and we will happily honor the fact that you are bringing a new and precious trail runner into the community. The deferral is valid for two years. In order to be considered for a Pregnancy Deferral, please notify us 30 or more in advance of your race date. Please note this policy does not apply to team races, where a pregnant team member can withdraw and be reimbursed by a replacement team member.

If a registered runner has to cancel their race entry, we offer partial credit toward a future Daybreak race if you withdraw in advance (see cancellation instructions below). We work hard to provide one of the most flexible, fair and feasible race credit policies in the industry, while also taking our cumulative staff time and nonrecoverable expenses leading up to a race into account. Credit percentage uses the following tiered structure, and is based on the date a runner withdraws prior to race day:
90+ days before race date: 75% credit
45 or more days before race date: 50% credit
21 or more days before race date: 25% credit
Less than 21 days before race date: no credit available.
CANCELLATION INSTRUCTIONS: If a runner needs to cancel their registration, THE RUNNER shall withdraw from the race via their UltraSignup account in order to get the race credit. Daybreak staff will not do it for you and will not apply credit retroactively. Please follow these steps to CANCEL a race registration:
Login to UltraSignup
Click “Registration History” under account name
Scroll to the race to cancel and click “Edit”
Click on “Cancel Registration”
Choose “Event Credit”
Once complete, the credit is tied to the runner's account and will automatically apply during registration for their next Daybreak race.
Race Credit Conditions:
Credit is valid for one year from the date of cancellation of a race entry.
Redeeming race credit does not allow someone to enter a sold out race, bypass a waitlist or allow them to register before a race opens to everyone.

We want our events to happen as much as anyone! However, Daybreak Racing reserves the right to cancel, alter, postpone or reschedule any race course, race distance or entire event for any reason and at any time if conditions are deemed unsafe or dangerous to staff, volunteers and/or participants, including in response to a force majeure event occurring during a race or in advance of a race. Force majeure includes but is not limited to extreme/severe weather, severe air quality (generally a sustained AQI of >200), wildfire danger, earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, flooding, storm damage, communicable or infectious illness outbreak, act of war or terrorism, security threat or any other extreme condition or unforeseen circumstance that makes a race impossible to conduct safely, in violation of event insurance policy or event permitting conditions. Race credit and refund options will be determined on a case by case basis if an event is forced to be cancelled.
Race Postponement:
In the event we cannot hold a race on its planned date, we will make every feasible attempt to reschedule the event for a later date in the same year.

Daybreak Racing does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, creed, national origin, gender, age, physical or mental disability, Veteran status, marital status, sexual orientation or gender expression. We strive to foster a culture of inclusivity and it is important to us that our participants are accepted and welcomed at our events. With this in mind, we have established this Transgender & Non-Binary Athlete Policy for all Daybreak Racing events.
As the governing body of Mountain, Ultra and Trail running in the United States, USATF has established their Policy on Transgender and Transexual Athletes, from which our Policy is based. We also look for additional guidance from the International Olympic Committee’s developing Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex Variations.
This policy is intended to facilitate the participation of transgender and non-binary athletes in a way that respects an individual’s personal rights and dignity in regards to gender identification and/or expression, while simultaneously preserving the integrity of competition for prizes and records based on sex.
While we recognize that there are a variety of perspectives on this issue, Daybreak Racing is fully committed to supporting the LGBTQIA+ Community and the rights of all humans. As always, we welcome respectful feedback, especially from transgender athletes.
Entrance Policy for Transgender Athletes
A runner’s self-declared gender at registration will be accepted at face value, and no additional supporting evidence is required. The sole reason for this policy is to ensure fairness in competition for prize money, awards and records.
A transgender female (male-to-female) entrant can register to compete as a female, provided they have undergone continuous, medically supervised hormone treatment for gender transition for at least one year prior to the race.
A transgender male (female-to-male) entrant can register to compete as a male. Transgender male runners cannot register to compete as a female if they have begun hormone treatment for gender transition, that includes testosterone or any other banned substance (as defined by the World Antidoping Agency).
Runners may compete in the category of their sex assigned at birth if they have not undergone hormone treatment.
Transgender entrants, at their option, may provide medical documentation related to their transition to the Race Director and/or consulted medical professionals prior to the race. All information about the runner’s gender identity and medical information, including any information provided pursuant to this policy, will be kept strictly confidential.
Challenges of Results Involving Transgender Athletes
Daybreak Racing has adopted this policy and retains sole authority and discretion to review any challenge regarding the gender status of a podium finisher. As such, we expect all parties to behave in a manner that is honest, compassionate, and respectful. We will not tolerate hateful or discriminatory behavior by any of our runners, or those associated with the event, regardless of the cause.
Challenges may be made to results which are directly related to a runner’s self-declared gender only when a top 3 position is at stake. There shall be no basis for, nor tolerance of, any challenge to a runner’s self-declared gender unless a top 3 finish or award is at stake. A challenge must be made in writing or email to the Race Director within 7 days of race completion and must be submitted privately and with the utmost discretion and respect for all parties involved. Only individuals who may have been directly impacted (by loss of prize money, an award, or podium placing) shall have standing to submit a challenge. Neither party may publicly post or discuss the challenge until a decision has been reached by race officials.
In the event of a challenge, Daybreak Racing may request supporting documentation from a medical professional. All information about the runner’s gender identity and medical information, including any information provided pursuant to this policy, will be kept strictly confidential. The Race Director, with input from consulted medical professional(s), will review the relevant facts and make a final decision.
If the runner is not in compliance with this policy, they will forfeit any prizes, awards and positions, but will retain their official finish. Any announcements made by the race will simply state whether a runner was or was not in compliance with our policy and the associated action taken by the race. We will not disclose, unless requested or allowed by the transgender runner, any medical information related to the decision.
Drug Testing
If a transgender runner is selected for drug testing at a Daybreak race and tests positive for a banned substance, it will be considered a legitimate medical use for the purposes of future participation in Daybreak races if the runner can demonstrate that the banned substance was being taken in connection with the person’s medically supervised hormone treatment for gender transition. The only exception is female-to-male transgender entrants who register to compete as a female.
For the purposes of USADA, WADA, USATF, WMRA and any other sanctioning bodies, athletes may be subject to sanctions consistent with the policies of these various bodies. As with all participants, transgender athletes have an obligation to understand and adhere to antidoping rules and understand how they may apply to their specific circumstances.
Non-Binary Athletes
Some people’s gender identity cannot be simply defined by the binary terms of ‘man’ or ‘woman’. Instead, they experience their gender in another way. Typically, we refer to this group of people as being ‘non-binary’. The term non-binary refers to a person identifying as either having a gender which is in-between or beyond the two categories ‘man’ and ‘woman’, as fluctuating between ‘man’ and ‘woman’, or as having no gender, either permanently or some of the time.
All Daybreak races have a male, female and non-binary division as options in runner profiles, registration and results.
Eligibility for available podium prizes is limited to the Men's and Women's divisions. At Daybreak Racing, we are committed to inclusion and hope to expand our podium prizes to include all divisions, including Non-Binary, in the future.
We will periodically review this policy to ensure it is as up to date, feasible and equitable as possible. Please contact us via email if you have any questions, comments, or feedback.

Daybreak Racing is committed to clean sport and does not condone the use of performance enhancing drugs or banned substances at any level of competition. We believe all athletes competing in our events and sport in general should educate themselves on the anti-doping rules and banned substances established by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), and on other anti-doping rules and policies.
We proudly support TrueSport, USADA’s clean sport initiative dedicated to promoting a positive youth sport experience that helps young athletes build the life skills and core values for success on and off the field.
In order to further this commitment and to help create a clean sport in mountain, ultra and trail running, Daybreak Racing will be enforcing the policy outlined below and will require athletes competing in events to acknowledge the policy and agree to a Code of Conduct that allows Daybreak Racing to enforce the policy. All athletes who receive prize money and podium recognition shall review and sign our Attestation of Eligibility & Clean Sport form.
Athletes who have been banned from competition by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), any national sports federation, or a similar organization identified by Daybreak Racing, for a violation of applicable anti-doping rules or policies, are prohibited from competing at any Daybreak Racing event while the ban is effective.
Once the ban has been served and officially lifted, the athlete may compete at any Daybreak Racing event, however, such athlete will forever be ineligible to receive prize money, awards, podium recognition, or overall or age group competitive rankings at any Daybreak Racing event. If a ban is overturned on appeal or otherwise vacated, the athlete will be eligible to compete on the same terms as all other athletes and will be eligible for prize money, awards, etc.
If we determine, at any time, that an athlete competed in a Daybreak Racing event while banned from competition as outlined in this policy, that athlete must forfeit the event and return any prize money, awards, etc. Daybreak Racing shall have sole and absolute discretion in determining whether a qualifying ban was imposed.
This policy is subject to change by Daybreak Racing at any time. If changed, we will notify registered runners of the updated policy.
Prize Money Eligibility
To be eligible for elite entry or prize purse at any Daybreak Racing event, an athlete must:
Not be currently serving a suspension issued by the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) or the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for use of a banned substance
Not have ever served a ban issued by USADA or WADA for the use of performance enhancing drugs
Not be represented by coaches and/or agents who have had 2 or more athletes receiving such suspensions in the previous 4 years
Not be represented by coaches and/or agents who served a ban for use of performance enhancing drugs during their own athletic career*
Provide proper documentation proving they are eligible for prize money (form W-9, W-8ECI or W-8BEN)
Sign a statement attesting they are in compliance with USADA and WADA anti-doping regulations related to banned substance use and if issued a doping suspension or ban in the future, they will not be allowed back at the event for any reason
Consent to random drug testing according to the standards and procedures of USATF, USADA and WADA
Any athlete that believes they have been barred from a Daybreak Racing event or the opportunity to earn prize money at the event because of mistaken identity due to near or exact name of a person currently suspended, banned or previously banned, must submit documentation certified by a notary in advance to the race director proving that they are not the same person identified as serving a suspension, ban or previous ban.
*Athletes have a duty to ensure they are represented by reputable coaches and agents and have a duty to consult the WADA list of athletes that are or have served a doping ban before signing with a coach or agent.

Transfer Distance
A participant may transfer race distances within the same event, and may do so within their Ultrasignup account as long as the requested race is not sold out and the request to change is made at least two weeks prior to race day. If an event participant would like to change to a cheaper race distance (with available space) at the same event, they will not receive a refund. If a participant would like to upgrade to a more expensive race distance (with available space) at the same event, the participant will be directed to pay the price difference in Ultrasignup for the desired distance.
Drop Bags
If a participant doesn’t pick up their drop bag from the event and has no way of returning to pick it up (either at the event or at the Race Director’s location in Hillsboro, Oregon), the participant can choose to have their drop bag and contents donated or discarded.
RETURN: Please consider that drop bags will not be returned back to the race staging area until the aid station shuts down after race sweepers arrive. Have crew grab your drop bags from the aid station if possible.
CONTENTS: Do not store valuables in drop bags! The race is not responsible for missing, damaged, lost or stolen drop bags or contents.
FORGOTTEN BAGS: Please note we do not ship or deliver forgotten drop bags. You can arrange to pick up forgotten drop bags from us if we have them.
Swag Purchases
Race shirts, hats, etc., are purchased months in advance, are year-specific and non-refundable. No refunds will be issued for any reason regarding pre-ordered race shirts, hats and other add-ons. These items will also not be shipped.
Swag purchases must be picked up at race day check-in (or packet pick-up event when applicable). Remaining shirts and other items not picked up by the time the race starts are considered forfeited and will be re-sold when our merchandise table opens after the race starts.
